Priorities

Established in 2001, the European Medicines Group (EMG) is a voice for UK operations of continental European headquartered research-based pharmaceutical companies and seeks to promote a dialogue between the UK Government, the NHS and wider stakeholders.

The EMG works closely with the industry’s trade body, the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry. The EMG is able to bring to UK stakeholders a first-hand perspective of doing business with the NHS through the eyes of European companies, holding a mirror up to the UK whilst seeking to promote UK interests amongst our global organisations.

Our priorities are:

  • Enabling people in the UK to gain timely access to the medicines we research, develop and manufacture, as benchmarked with equivalent European countries
  • Understanding NHS prescribing and the factors which lead to generally lower and slower adoption of modern medicines in the UK compared with equivalent European countries
  • Moving perceptions of medicines as an area of cost containment to a worthwhile investment that can bring system-wide improvements in quality and efficiencies in the NHS
  • Working with Government to ensure a holistic approach to industrial and health policy, that includes mechanisms and incentives to measure, recognise, reward and encourage the use of innovation that brings genuine benefits to patients
  • Supporting a UK commercial environment that attracts inward investment.
