The European Medicines Group (EMG) represents UK operating companies of research-based pharmaceutical companies, headquartered in continental Europe.
The EMG:
- Invests upwards of £1 bn per year in research and development in the UK.
- Directly employs over 8,500 people including highly skilled roles, in more than 40 regional sites across the UK and covering all aspects of our business.
- Works to promote a greater understanding of the value of our member companies and the research, development and manufacture of the medicines we produce and the benefits to the NHS and the UK economy.
- Seeks to bring improvements to the operating environment in the UK and to promote it as a location that not only researches but adopts innovative medicines and therefore attracts continued inward investment.
Our members range from some of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world, through medium sized to small, specialised companies and new biopharmaceutical companies, bringing the first of their innovative new medicines to UK patients.
EMG companies are at the forefront of developing innovative treatments: from common conditions and national priorities such as diabetes, dementia and age-related but now preventable sight loss, to very rare, genetic disorders. These include medicines to treat a wide range of solid and blood cancers (from rare to common); severe neurological diseases; mental illnesses; immune disorders; infertility disorders and treatments for a wide range of rare conditions where there has been considerable need for new treatments.
Some of our members also develop and manufacture vaccines designed to prevent or eradicate diseases.
Our members are pioneers in targeted medicines to enable precision-treatment of a wide range of challenging conditions.
They also provide a wide range of services to enable patients to optimally benefit from treatments and to support delivery of NHS services to the patients that the industry and the NHS jointly serve.
